Oscars 2025: Emilia Pérez Sets Record with 13 Nominations, Outpacing The Brutalist and Wicked

Key Highlights:

  • Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez earns 13 Oscar nominations, the highest ever for a non-English language film.
  • Star Karla Sofía Gascón becomes the first out trans actor nominated for an Oscar.
  • The Brutalist and Wicked follow with 10 nominations each.
  • Surprises and snubs include Pamela Anderson, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Angelina Jolie.

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a groundbreaking musical about a transgender gangster fleeing the mob in Mexico, has made Oscars history. With 13 nominations announced on Thursday, the film surpassed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001) and Roma (2018), both of which earned 10 nominations each.

The recognition also marks a historic moment for Karla Sofía Gascón, the film’s star, as the first out trans actor ever nominated. Elliot Page, nominated for Juno in 2008, achieved the honor prior to transitioning.

Nominations for Emilia Pérez include:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (Jacques Audiard)
  • Adapted Screenplay
  • International Feature
  • Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña)
  • Original Score
  • Best Sound
  • Editing
  • Cinematography
  • Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Two nods for Original Song

Meanwhile, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, a three-and-a-half-hour epic about a Hungarian architect played by Adrien Brody, secured 10 nominations. It ties with Wicked, the lavish adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, as frontrunners behind Emilia Pérez.

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave received eight nominations each. However, Conclave director Edward Berger, whose All Quiet on the Western Front swept awards two years ago, was notably snubbed for Best Director. While Ralph Fiennes leads the acting honors for the film, Isabella Rossellini’s nomination for Supporting Actress stands as the only other acting nod.

On the brighter side, A Complete Unknown delivered unexpected nominations, including Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, alongside Timothée Chalamet in the leading role.

As the race heats up, the Oscars 2025 promises intense competition, historic milestones, and lingering surprises.
