Apple Unveils the iPhone 16E: What You Get for $599

A New iPhone in February?! Apple dropped the iPhone 16E on its website this Wednesday, adding to the iPhone 16 lineup while giving the 2022 iPhone SE a major refresh with a new name, design, processor, and advanced Apple Intelligence features.

The iPhone 16E starts at $599 (£599, AU$999), a $170 jump from the previous SE’s $429 base price. In comparison, the standard iPhone 16 starts at $799. This places the 16E in the higher end of the budget-friendly market, sitting between competitors like the $499 Google Pixel 8A and Samsung's $650 Galaxy S24 FE.

In an era where phone makers are racing to integrate custom AI features into their devices, Apple demonstrates that its artificial intelligence isn’t reserved solely for its premium models. The iPhone 16E runs on the same A18 chip found in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, allowing it to support Apple Intelligence. This makes the 16E a standout: a sub-$600 phone capable of running the same AI features as its pricier counterparts.

The iPhone 16E offers an interesting value proposition. On paper, it appears to be a significant upgrade over the iPhone SE in nearly every aspect. However, it loses two of the SE's key advantages: its affordable price and compact size. That said, the iPhone 16E still justifies its $600 starting price, especially with potential carrier discounts and deals at launch. Still, as with the old SE, it raises the question: how long will this phone remain relevant?

The iPhone 16E will be available for preorder on Friday, Feb. 21, and officially goes on sale Friday, Feb. 28.
