The AFL community is reeling from two heartbreaking losses following the tragic passing of former Brisbane Lions player and Geelong assistant coach Troy Selwood, along with Essendon VFL coach Dale Tapping. Troy Selwood, a father of two, passed away suddenly at the age of 40, leaving the football world in shock and mourning. The Selwood family, deeply connected to the AFL, is devastated by his untimely death.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of our son, brother, and father, Troy, this morning. We will miss him more than words can express,” the Selwood family said in a statement released by the AFL on Tuesday. Troy was the twin brother of former West Coast Eagles player Adam and the older sibling of Geelong’s four-time premiership champion Joel and former Cats and West Coast player Scott.
“Troy was a beloved and cherished member of our family. Throughout his life, he brought joy and light to everyone who knew him," the family’s statement continued. "He was a devoted son to Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel, and Scott, and a loving father to his beautiful children, Tom and Sadie.
“We will deeply miss Troy’s courage, humor, thoughtfulness, and boundless compassion. He had a generous spirit, cared deeply for others, and always strived to make a positive impact on the lives of those around him. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support he received throughout his life, and we know his many friends, teammates, and colleagues will miss him dearly.
“Troy’s achievements were many—his journey from student to AFL player, his role in recruiting and mentoring young players to help them fulfill their AFL dreams, and most recently, his work at Geelong Grammar School, where he continued to inspire and guide others. We know many will reach out to share their memories of Troy, and we deeply appreciate your love and support during this difficult time. We ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this immense loss.”
