"Journalism Claims Victory in 2025 Preakness Stakes: Full Results and Key Moments from Pimlico"
The 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore delivered drama, excitement, and a stunning come-from-behind victory by Journalism, the pre-race favorite.
With nine horses competing over 1 3/16 miles on the dirt, the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown drew attention despite the absence of Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty, who skipped the race to rest for the Belmont Stakes.
Trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Umberto Rispoli, Journalism entered the race with high expectations after finishing second at Churchill Downs. And this time, he delivered.
After a sluggish start and getting boxed in on the rail during the final turn, Journalism broke free in the stretch. He surged past Gosger—who had led nearly the entire race—just before the wire, winning by less than a length in a time of 1:55.47. Sandman rounded out the top three, well behind the dueling leaders.

The Story Behind Journalism's Name
Journalism was named by part-owner Aron Wellman, a former high school sports editor. Purchased for $825,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale, the colt is by Curlin out of Mopotism. Struggling to combine the sire and dam's names into something meaningful, the owners landed on "Journalism" as a personal tribute.
Why Sovereignty Skipped the Preakness
Sovereignty, the Derby winner, is sitting out the Preakness to prepare for the Belmont Stakes. Trainer Bill Mott and the Godolphin team cited the tight two-week turnaround between races as a concern—a growing trend in modern horse racing, where trainers prioritize recovery over chasing the Triple Crown.
