Israel has launched a major strike on Iran’s largest petrochemical facility in Asaluyeh, according to Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz.
Multiple explosions were reported at the complex, Iran’s Fars news agency said. The facility also lost power after two companies supplying electricity, water, and oxygen were targeted, according to Tasnim news agency.
The attack comes just days after another Israeli strike on an Iranian petrochemical site. Katz stated that the two facilities together account for around 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports and are now out of operation.
He described the damage as a “severe economic blow” worth tens of billions of dollars, adding that Iran’s petrochemical sector plays a key role in funding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and supporting the country’s military capabilities.
Katz further said that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have directed the Israeli military to continue targeting Iran’s national infrastructure.
Tensions have escalated sharply since an Israeli strike in mid-March on the South Pars gas field—shared by Iran and Qatar—which prompted Iran to retaliate with attacks on energy targets across the Middle East.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that military strikes occurred near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, though the facility itself was not damaged.
