Earthquake in Maine Shakes New England
Moderate tremors were felt across Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
An earthquake struck off the coast of Maine on Monday, causing light to moderate shaking across the state and in parts of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake registered a magnitude of 3.8 and occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. ET. The epicenter was located near York Harbor, Maine, approximately 45 miles southwest of Portland.
The National Weather Service reported no tsunami watches, warnings, or advisories following the event. Additionally, there have been no reports of fatalities or major damage.The USGS predicts a 15% likelihood of experiencing at least one aftershock with a magnitude of 3 or higher in the coming week.
This event marks the strongest earthquake recorded in the northeastern United States since April, when a 4.8-magnitude quake struck near Lebanon, New Jersey. According to USGS records, that incident was the most significant seismic activity in the Northeast in over a decade.
In a post on X, the agency noted that while earthquakes are rare along the Atlantic Seaboard, they are not unprecedented.
