Health experts warn of danger.
NEW YORK — President Donald Trump is once again withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), the White House announced late Monday.
This executive order, signed on his first day back in office, fulfills Trump's campaign pledge to distance the U.S. from global institutions. However, health experts are raising alarms about the move, warning that it could leave the U.S. isolated, with serious implications for pandemic preparedness, disease response, and international diplomatic relations.
Historically, the United States has been the largest contributor to the WHO, which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. As a key entity within the United Nations, the WHO plays a critical role in managing global health emergencies. Since its creation after World War II, the U.S. has been a major influence on the organization’s policies and strategies.
Trump has been a vocal critic of the WHO, particularly regarding its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. His administration faced its own criticisms for its handling of the crisis, and in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, he initiated the first process of withdrawing the U.S. from the organization.
