First-Quarter Analysis: :Notre Dame vs. Ohio State
If patience and persistence prove key in the College Football Playoff title game, Notre Dame might just have a shot at toppling Ohio State.
That seemed evident in the first quarter, which was already an improvement over the Irish’s last national championship appearance 12 years ago. As the scoreboard showed a 7-0 lead for Notre Dame, it was hard to draw any other conclusion.
Taking possession to open the game, Notre Dame orchestrated an impressive drive that consumed nine minutes and 45 seconds. They successfully converted multiple third downs and a couple of fourth downs, eventually setting up a first-and-goal opportunity at Ohio State’s 1-yard line. Quarterback Riley Leonard, who was instrumental in advancing the drive with his running ability, capped it off by rushing into the end zone for the game’s opening touchdown.
