A federal judge in Rhode Island has issued a temporary restraining order blocking Donald Trump’s freeze on federal spending. The decision came after the White House press secretary’s statements contradicted the administration’s claim that it had rescinded the memo from the White House budget office that ordered the freeze.
As reported by Mattathias Schwartz in The New York Times, lawyers representing 22 states and the District of Columbia presented as evidence a social media post from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. In the post, she insisted that, despite the memo’s withdrawal, “the federal funding freeze” remained in effect.
U.S. District Court Judge James McConnell Jr. found that Trump’s spending freeze continued to cause harm, citing “hugely ambiguous” messaging from the administration. He also referenced extensive testimony from state officials who reported being locked out of systems used for Medicaid and other government reimbursements.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mocked Leavitt in a post on the platform formerly known as Twitter, quipping that Leavitt’s tweets were so damaging they “earned the entire administration a federal restraining order.” She added sarcastically, “Keep talking and tweeting, girl! You’re doing great.”
