3.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes North Hollywood, Tremors Felt Across Los Angeles

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck North Hollywood on Sunday night, causing shaking across Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at approximately 10:13 p.m., about 1.4 miles east-southeast of North Hollywood. A USGS map showed "light shaking" in Burbank and North Hollywood, with tremors also felt across a wide area of Los Angeles, as well as parts of Orange and Ventura counties.

Seismologist Lucy Jones noted on social media that the quake was "too small to definitively assign to any fault," though the nearest one is the Hollywood fault. She downplayed the event, stating, "Yawn. Nothing much to say about an earthquake in earthquake country."

Meanwhile, about 10 miles away, Hollywood's biggest stars were wrapping up the Oscars ceremony.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. The Los Angeles Fire Department did not activate its earthquake response protocol, which involves a strategic citywide survey by land, air, and sea, according to spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

To stay prepared for future quakes, ABC7 has compiled a list of essential items for an earthquake emergency kit.
